We reached the main entrance and walked out into the fresh spring air. Sitting in visitor parking was a lone motorbike, and I glanced around to see if he’d maybe parked his truck in another stall.

“Hope you don’t mind.” Adam stopped at the bike and opened the back storage thing, passing me a helmet. “Had I known this was going to be a date–” He whispered the word and grimaced. “I would’ve brought a different mode of transportation. But I figured since we were going as friends, this would be more fun.”

Already the word was pressing new meaning into things, and we hadn’t even left the parking lot.

“I’ll get my car. Just give me a minute.” My heart was racing but not because of the handsome man before me holding out a helmet. “I’m really scared.”

“About this being called something else or the mode of transportation?”

“The motorcycle.” I couldn’t stop staring at it. “This is all new for me as I’ve never ridden on one in my life.”

“Never?” Despite his disbelief in my comment, he carried on. “They’re fun.”

“And super scary.”

“Not if the driver is responsible.” He pulled his helmet on and adjusted the strap under his chin. “I’ve never had an accident, or even been close.”

My eyes roamed the length of the motorbike. It wasn’t a Tom Cruise-Top Gun style variety, more along the lines of what you’d see a dad drive, but it wasn’t a Harley with its big handlebars. Truth be told, it did look rather stable, as far as bikes went, and it appeared heavier than my car, which was weird.

“Will an iron-clad promise to drive carefully ease your tension?”

A deep inhale expanded my chest.

“I’m really going to have to do more research on you. I don’t know much about you, aside from your fear of water, your fear of heights, and now this.” He tipped his head in genuine curiosity, all the while keeping a certain charm and sincerity in his voice. “What’s this fear all about?”

“All of it. There’s nothing separating me from the ground in the event of …” Finishing that sentence would surely jinx the situation, something we didn’t need. There was already enough mounting pressure.

“How about a quick ride around the block? If it’s too much, we’ll come back and uber it over. Fair enough?”

Slowly, despite my hesitation, my head took the lead and nodded as my shaky hands reached for the helmet and dropped it on. Good thing I hadn’t really done much with my hair as it was all going to be plastered to my head now.

Adam’s fingers grazed my cheeks and jawline, sending pulses of electricity through my body, as he adjusted the chin strap and tapped his warm finger on the tip of my nose. “Cute.”

I don’t know what possessed me, but I curtsied to his comment.

Adam swung a leg over the bike and kicked up the kickstand, holding the bike firmly. “You’re going to put your foot on that step and swing your leg over. Use me for balance and please trust me.
